St. Mary's Council #1470 Resolution of October 23rd, 1922
WHEREAS, it has come to our attention that the Maryland Society of the Colonial Dames of America have erected and will dedicate on the 25th Day of October, this year, a monument to one Lionel Copley, the first Royal Governor of the Province of Maryland, and
WHEREAS, the said Lionel Copley was a narrow minded bigot, whose outstanding accomplishment during his regime (1692) was the repeal of the Toleration Act of 1649, long the proudest boast of Maryland, and the enactment of an obnoxious and oppressive law whereby the Protestant Episcopal Church became the established church of the province and all taxable were assessed by the poll for its maintenance and support, and
WHEREAS, we the loyal members of Holy Mother Church, Knights of an honorable Order and true Americans disapprove of any public commemoration of such as Benedict Arnold, Lionel Copley or anyother whose public acts and private character have brought dishonorable shame to our honored place in history; therefore be it
RESOLVED that we desire to express our unqualified disapproval of this most inappropriate move on the part of the Maryland Society of the Colonial Dames of America and anyothers who are in anywise connected therewith, and be it further
RESOLVED that this expression of our disapproval be recorded upon the minutes of this our meeting.
respectfully submitted,
